A specialist with extensive knowledge, experience and interest in dementia and memory problems will ideally be involved in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Ideals are not always possible in real life and many physicians provide excellent diagnoses and care for those with AD. Also, a specialist may not be necessary for continued care once the diagnosis has been made. You will need a physician who can prescribe and adjust medications, answer your questions and treat other illnesses. Your family physician may be able to provide this ongoing care or may refer you to a physician specializing in geriatric medicine (treatment of the elderly) or Alzheimer's disease.

Your family physician is a good starting point for locating specialists. Other sources include contacting local hospitals, teaching hospitals, or medical schools in your state for names of physicians specializing in Alzheimer's disease. The Alzheimer's Association and the Alzheimer's Disease Education & Referral Center can direct you to local agencies that in turn can refer you to local specialists.

The American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry provides a referral service to locate Board Certified geriatric psychiatrists in your area.

In addition to a physician for the treatment of AD, nurses, social workers and clinical psychologists are important. The nurse may be the person you can reach most easily and who can coordinate the work that you, the doctor, and others do. Social workers are skilled in looking at your situation and needs and matching these with available services. They also know the resources and services in your community. Some clinical psychologists specialize in educating, supporting and counseling families that have a member afflicted with AD.
