Alzheimer's disease (pronounced AHLZ-hi-merz) is the most common cause of dementia in the elderly. Dementia is a brain disorder that usually causes loss of memory and intellectual or thinking abilities that interfere with social and/or occupational functioning. Alzheimer's disease causes 60 to 70% of dementia in elderly people. Alzheimer's disease is progressive, gradually robbing sufferers of their ability to think and function, and sometimes reducing their lifespan.

For people 60 to 64 years old, the risk of getting Alzheimer's disease before they die is about 12%. The risk increases after age of 60 with more than 40% of those 85 and older having Alzheimer's disease.

We have also developed Alzheimer's Early Recognition Telephone System called ALERTS. This is a free telephone service, 1-800-289-4974, with anonymous access to information about Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.

While Alzheimer's disease is the time-honored standard name, Alzheimer disease is beginning to be used (dropping the possessive 's). The American Medical Association is now using this term in articles in the Association's journal, JAMA. We'll continue using Alzheimer's disease and abbreviate it AD, but want you to know that you may see the term Alzheimer disease in your readings.
